Former Mets pitching prospect Matt Pobereyko dead at 31 from heart attack

Matt Pobereyko, a former pitching prospect for the New York Mets, has passed away at the age of 31 due to a sudden heart attack while playing in Mexico. Hector Gomez, a well-known MLB insider, first reported the news, and his former teams have since confirmed his death.

Pobereyko played for the Sioux City Explorers, a professional minor league team based in Iowa, from 2019 to 2022. The team expressed their sadness in a statement, saying that they are grieving for his family, friends, teammates, and fans. The Explorers manager, Steve Montgomery, also paid tribute to Pobereyko, stating that he was a fierce competitor and a loyal friend. They will miss him not only as a baseball player but also as a friend.

Pobereyko was born in Hammond, Indiana, on December 24th, and he played college baseball at Kentucky Wesleyan College. He signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2016, and he joined the Mets organization in 2017, where he spent several seasons in the minors. He also had a stint with the Miami Marlins organization.

According to reports, Pobereyko had recently played in the Mexican League and Dominican Winter League before his untimely death. The baseball community is mourning his loss, and his memory will be cherished by those who knew him.
